If you are reading one day bathroom remodel reviews, you are really asking one question. Does it hold up?
That is the right question, and it has an answer. A one day bathroom remodel is a surface job. New acrylic or composite walls, usually a new tub or shower surface fitted over the old one, new trim, and a door. It is quick because nobody opens the wall. That is not a shortcut somebody is hiding from you. It is the product.
So the honest version reads like this. If the framing and the waterproofing behind your existing surround are sound, a surface product covers a tired bathroom fast, and there is nothing wrong with choosing one. If they are not sound, the job covers the problem instead of fixing it, and you find out later.
We are a general contractor. We build the full version, so that bias is worth knowing about while you read. It is also why everything below is tied to the Florida Building Code rather than to our opinion of anybody else's product. For the wider picture, start with bathroom remodeling in Southwest Florida.
What a One Day Bathroom Remodel Actually Includes
Scope varies by company, but the shape is consistent.
What usually changes: the wall surround, the tub or shower floor surface, the valve trim, the shower head, a shelf or two, and the door or the curtain rod. Grab bars and a seat are common add ons.
What usually stays: the framing, whatever sits behind the old surround, the drain and where it is located, the supply lines inside the wall, the subfloor, the bathroom floor, the vanity, the toilet, the lighting, and the layout.
The second list is the whole reason the first list takes a day.
A liner is a shell that fits over what you already have
A tub liner is a formed acrylic or PVC shell made to the shape of an existing tub and bonded or fastened over it. A wall system is the same idea applied to the surround. Nothing is demolished, so nothing has to be inspected, rebuilt, or waterproofed.
That is a description, not an insult. It is exactly what the product is designed to do, and for a sound bathroom with a dated finish it does it well.
Why What Sits Behind the Wall Decides This
Tile is not waterproof. Grout is not waterproof. In a shower built on site, the waterproofing is a system behind the finish, and the Florida Building Code is specific about what that system has to be.
The 2023 Florida Building Code, Residential, 8th Edition, Section P2709.2 requires that on site built up shower receptors be lined. It names the approved materials: sheet lead, sheet copper, a plastic liner meeting ASTM D4068 or ASTM D4551, hot mopping, or a sheet applied bonded waterproof membrane meeting ANSI A118.10.
A surface product installed over an existing surround does not change what that lining is, or whether it was ever installed. The new wall goes over the old one, and the old one stays exactly as good or as bad as it was that morning.
When we do open a wall in this market, the most common find is tile set straight onto drywall with no membrane behind it. The second is a soft bottom plate where water has been wicking at the tub flange for years. Those conditions were already in the house before anyone quoted anything. The question is only whether they get found or covered.
Florida makes the stakes higher than they would be in a dry climate. Our guide to remodeling for Florida's humidity covers why a wet wall cavity here rarely dries back out on its own.
Where a One Day Job Crosses Into Permitted Work
This question gets answered badly all the time, usually by whoever wants the sale. Start with what the code itself exempts.
The Florida Building Code, Building, 8th Edition, Section 105.2 lists work that is exempt from permit. Two of the plumbing exemptions matter here:
- The stopping of leaks in drains, water, soil, waste or vent pipe. The same item adds that if a concealed trap, drain pipe, water, soil, waste or vent pipe is defective and has to be removed and replaced with new material, that work "shall be considered as new work and a permit shall be obtained and inspection made as provided in this code."
- The clearing of stoppages or the repairing of leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures, and the removal and reinstallation of water closets, "provided such repairs do not involve or require the replacement or rearrangement of valves, pipes or fixtures."
Read the second one twice. It exempts repairs, and it stops applying the moment the work involves replacing or rearranging a valve, a pipe, or a fixture. A new mixing valve is a replaced valve. A new tub is a replaced fixture.
The same section also states that exemptions "shall not be deemed to grant authorization for any work to be done in any manner in violation of the provisions of this code." Skipping a permit never makes non compliant work compliant.
Who applies all that is the part homeowners get wrong. Permitting authority here is per jurisdiction, not per county. The City of Fort Myers, the Village of Estero, the City of Sanibel, the Town of Fort Myers Beach, Collier County, and Lee County for unincorporated Lee each run their own review. Ask the office that covers your address whether the exact scope you are being sold is exempt, and ask before the crew arrives rather than after.
Our own rule is simpler than the code. If a job touches potable water, electricity, or gas, we pull the permit and schedule the inspections.
When a Full Remodel Is the Better Spend
Four situations where a surface product is the wrong tool.
The wall behind the surround is not sound. Soft drywall, a spongy bottom plate, a stain on the ceiling below, or a musty smell that never leaves the room. Covering any of those buys quiet, not repair.
The layout is the problem. A one day product cannot move a drain, so it cannot change where anything sits. If the complaint is that the room is awkward, a new surface will not fix it.
The floor, the vanity, or the toilet are tired too. A surface product stops at the tub. Paying twice, once for the alcove now and once for everything else in three years, usually costs more than doing it in one sequence.
You want a bigger or curbless shower. Section P2708.1 of the residential code requires a shower compartment to have not less than 900 square inches of interior cross sectional area and to measure not less than 30 inches in its smallest dimension, held to a height of not less than 70 inches above the drain. Changing the footprint means framing and drain work, which is the opposite of a one day job. Converting a tub alcove into a walk in shower is its own sequence and is not a one day product.
Accessibility deserves its own note. A lot of one day quotes are bought for a parent or for the next twenty years, and a grab bar screwed to an acrylic wall is not the same as blocking installed between the studs. Our guide to aging in place bathroom design covers what to decide while a wall is still open.
Five Questions That Sort the Two Options Apart
Ask these of anyone quoting either version, including us.
- What exactly is being installed over, and how is it bonded or fastened to what is there?
- What happens if the wall is soft once the old surround comes off? Is a contingency already in the number I am signing, or does that become a change order?
- Is a valve, a pipe, or a fixture being replaced or moved? If the answer is yes, what did the building department that covers my address say about a permit?
- Who holds the license, and what is the number? Ours is CBC 1261775. Our guide to choosing a remodeling contractor explains how to verify any Florida license yourself in about five minutes.
- What is the warranty, who honors it, and what voids it?
Question two is the one that separates a real number from an attractive one. Anybody can quote a bathroom they have not opened. Very few will tell you in writing what happens when it opens badly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are one day bathroom remodels worth it?
For a structurally sound bathroom with a dated finish, yes, and the speed is genuine. For a bathroom with a water problem, no, because the product is not designed to solve one. The reviews you are reading almost certainly contain both experiences, and the difference between them is usually the condition of the wall rather than the crew.
Can a bathtub really be replaced in one day?
A one day bathtub replacement is normally a liner fitted over the existing tub, not a tub pulled out and a new one set. Removing a tub means disconnecting the drain and the overflow, dealing with the flange where it meets the wall, and closing everything back up, and that is a fixture replacement under Section 105.2 rather than an exempt repair. Ask which of the two you are buying, because both get described the same way.
What does one day shower remodeling leave out?
The pan and the waterproofing under it, in most cases. A wall system covers the vertical surfaces. If the shower floor stays, the receptor and its lining stay with it, and that is the assembly Section P2709.2 governs.
Do I need a permit for a tub liner?
That depends on what the installation actually touches and on the jurisdiction your address sits in. If no valve, pipe, or fixture is replaced or rearranged, it may fall inside the repair exemption. If any of them is, by the exemption's own wording it does not. Your building department gives you a straight answer in one phone call, and it is worth making.
Will a surface product fix a leak?
No. It hides the finish surface a leak passes through. Water that is getting into the wall or the floor keeps getting in, and it now does so where you cannot see it.
